IEB Grade 11 Trigonometry Cheat Sheet

Trigonometry is about 50 marks of Grade 11 Paper 2. Every rule is on these two pages.

Reduction and co-functions

  • CAST: All (Q1), Sin (Q2), Tan (Q3), Cos (Q4).

  • 180°±θ, 360°±θ: same ratio, sign from CAST. Negative angles: sin(−θ)=−sinθ, cos(−θ)=cosθ.

  • 90°±θ: sine and cosine swap;
    cos(90°+θ)=−sinθ.

  • Given tanθ and a quadrant: sketch x, y with signs, find r by Pythagoras.

Special angles

  • sin30°=21, cos30°=23, tan30°=31

  • sin45°=cos45°=21, tan45°=1

  • sin60°=23, cos60°=21, tan60°=3

Identities and equations

  • tanθ=cosθsinθ;
    sin2θ+cos2θ=1

  • Prove one side at a time; undefined where any denominator is 0.

  • Find the reference angle θ from the calculator (θ=sin−1c, cos−1c or tan−1c). sinx=c: x=θ+k⋅360° or 180°−θ+k⋅360°. cosx=c: x=±θ+k⋅360°. tanx=c: x=θ+k⋅180°. k∈Z.

  • Factorise; never divide by a ratio that could be 0.

Graphs

  • y=asinkx+q and y=acoskx+q: period ∣k∣360°, amplitude ∣a∣, range q−∣a∣≤y≤q+∣a∣.

  • y=atankx+q: period ∣k∣180°, no amplitude, range all real numbers. (k=0 throughout.)

  • sin(x+p): shift p left.

Triangles (2D only)

  • Sine rule: a side and its opposite angle known; check the ambiguous case.

  • Cosine rule: two sides and the included angle, or three sides.

  • Area =21absinC.

  • Proofs of the sine, cosine and area rules use the height from one vertex.

Know by heart

  • CAST and special angles

  • The proofs of the sine, cosine and area rules

On the formula sheet

  • Sine, cosine and area rules

Common traps

  • Swapping sine and cosine for 180°±θ.

  • Missing a family of solutions.

  • Calculator in radians.

  • Missing the obtuse case of the sine rule.
