IEB Grade 12 Trigonometry Cheat Sheet

Trigonometry is the biggest section of Paper 2 (about 50 marks). Everything on two pages.

Reduction and special angles

  • CAST: All (Q1), Sin (Q2), Tan (Q3), Cos (Q4).

  • 180°±θ and 360°±θ: same ratio, sign from CAST.

  • 90°±θ: sine and cosine swap. sin(−θ)=−sinθ, cos(−θ)=cosθ.

  • sin30°=cos60°=21;
    sin60°=cos30°=23;
    sin45°=cos45°=21;
    tan45°=1;
    tan60°=3.

Identities

  • tanθ=cosθsinθ;
    sin2θ+cos2θ=1

  • sin(α±β)=sinαcosβ±cosαsinβ

  • cos(α±β)=cosαcosβ∓sinαsinβ

  • sin2x=2sinxcosx;
    cos2x=cos2x−sin2x=1−2sin2x=2cos2x−1

  • Proofs: one side at a time; state where undefined (any denominator =0).

Equations

  • Reference angle θ from the calculator (sin−1c, cos−1c or tan−1c). sinx=c: x=θ+k⋅360° or 180°−θ+k⋅360°

  • cosx=c: x=±θ+k⋅360°. tanx=c: x=θ+k⋅180°. Always 'k∈Z'.

  • Never divide by sinx or cosx; factorise.

  • Multiple angles: divide the period too.

Graphs

  • y=asink(x+p)+q: amplitude ∣a∣, period ∣k∣360° (∣k∣180° for tan), shift p left. (k=0.)

Triangles

  • Sine rule sinAa=sinBb: side and opposite angle known. Check the ambiguous case.

  • Cosine rule a2=b2+c2−2bccosA: two sides and included angle, or three sides.

  • Area =21absinC.

  • 3D: find the side shared by the horizontal and vertical triangles first.

Know by heart

  • CAST and special angles

  • How to use the compound angle expansions for exact values (the derivation is not examined)

  • Which form of cos2x to use

On the formula sheet

  • Compound and double angle expansions

  • Sine, cosine and area rules

Common traps

  • Swapping sin and cos for 180°±θ.

  • Missing the second family of solutions.

  • Calculator in radian mode.

  • Using the cosine rule with a non-included angle.
