General solutions of trigonometric equations

Being checked by our tutors

Trigonometry · Updated 14 October 2026

A trig equation has infinitely many solutions because the graphs repeat. The general solution captures all of them in one line, and you then choose the ones that fall in a given interval. Expect 6 to 10 marks on this in Paper 2.

The general solution

First find the reference angle with a positive ratio on your calculator, then use CAST to place it in the correct quadrants.

  • : or
  • :
  • :

Here is the value of the ratio and is the angle your calculator gives for it (for a negative , use the reference angle and CAST as below).

where .

Example. , so . The reference angle is 60°, and cosine is negative in quadrants 2 and 3:

Always write "". It earns a mark.

Solutions in a given interval

Substitute integer values of into the general solution and keep the answers inside the interval.

Example. Solve for .

gives and gives . gives , which is outside the interval.

Notice the period: dividing by 2 also divides the by 2. Forgetting this is the most common error with multiple angles.

Equations requiring identities

If the equation has double angles or mixed ratios, rewrite it with one ratio of one angle, then factorise.

Example. Solve .

  • :
  • : or

Never divide both sides by a trig ratio such as . You lose the solutions where that ratio is 0. Factorise it out instead.

Equations that are quadratic in a ratio, such as , factorise like ordinary quadratics. Reject any factor giving a value outside for sine or cosine.

Key terms

General solution

An expression giving every solution of a trig equation, using .

Reference angle

The acute angle found from the positive value of the ratio.

Period

The interval after which a trig graph repeats: 360° for sine and cosine, 180° for tangent.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the second family of solutions for sine or cosine.

  • Not dividing the period by the coefficient of in multiple-angle equations.

  • Dividing by or and losing solutions.

  • Using the negative value on the calculator to find the reference angle.

  • Leaving out ''.
