“My son really benefited from the way Jafar’s teaches and would not have made it through matric without his help and input. By engaging in regular tutoring, my son was able to rest assured that Jafar would always be there to help through difficult concepts especially in exam periods. From my son’s experience, Jafar was able to convey concepts both in Maths and English, in several different ways if he was not grasping the idea. Jafar also relies heavily on interpersonal skills and engaging with students in order to gauge their level of competence. This allows for students to feel comfortable in asking questions or coming back to a concept with ease and not afraid of asking repeat questions if they struggle with an equation.”

“Kenan has been teaching our son Mathematics and English and we couldn't be happier with him. Kenan has a very relaxed way with children but still keeps him focused and makes sure the work gets done. We've noticed that our son is much more confident with both subjects and doesn't complain about lessons anymore, which, as a parent, says a lot! He has built a really good relationship with him and looks forward to their sessions each week.”

What you need to know about IEB Maths

What you need to know and how we support your child

IEB Mathematics follows national curriculum content, but Grade 12 learners write IEB examination papers, not the Department of Basic Education papers. At Global Tutors we specialise in IEB Maths and practise the question styles those papers use. We hand pick the best tutor for your child's needs.

IEB Maths requires clear problem-solving, logical structure, and fluency with the formulae and methods examiners expect. We build confidence through worked examples and past-paper practice.

For Grades 10 to 12, lessons build the content and then the question style used in IEB papers for IEB Maths. The IEB publishes subject assessment guidelines and past papers with marking guidelines. Tutors use those in the lesson.

IEB assessment is school-based assessment plus the final examination. We can explain an SBA task and how it is marked. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student. Sessions are one-to-one and booked around the school timetable.

We align to the IEB subject assessment guidelines so your child is ready for school-based assessment and the IEB examination.

With IEB Maths, we prioritise clear working and step-by-step reasoning so examiners can award full marks.

Common mistakes

Where maths marks are lost

Most lost marks in maths come from how the answer is written, not from topics your child has never seen. These are the mistakes we fix most often.

Skipping steps in the working

Method marks are awarded for each correct step, so an answer with no working can score zero even when the final number is right. Your tutor trains your child to set out every line the way the marking guideline expects.

Algebra slips inside harder questions

A sign error or a wrongly expanded bracket can wreck a calculus or functions question your child understands. Lessons build accurate algebra through short daily practice, so the basics hold up under exam pressure.

Euclidean geometry without reasons

Every statement in a geometry proof needs a reason in the accepted form, and statements without reasons lose most of their marks. Your tutor drills the standard reasons and how to lay out a proof step by step.

Sketching graphs that miss key features

Graph questions award marks for intercepts, turning points and asymptotes, and learners often leave one out. Your tutor gives your child a checklist for every sketch until it becomes automatic.

Finance formulas with the wrong period or rate

Learners often forget to divide the interest rate and multiply the number of periods when interest compounds monthly or quarterly. Lessons practise identifying i and n from the wording before any calculation starts.

Calculator and rounding errors

A calculator left in radians, or rounding too early in a long calculation, costs marks at the end. Your tutor shows your child how to keep full values until the last step and how to check the calculator settings before each paper. ---

Study strategy

Study plan and exam strategy for IEB Maths

A clear path from your syllabus or specification to exam day

  1. 1

    Grade 10-12

    Syllabus and CAPS alignment

Cover the curriculum systematically using CAPS and the IEB NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines. Build strong foundations in core topics so your child can apply knowledge in exams. We use past papers and marking guidelines to show what is expected.

  2. 2

From Grade 11 or early Grade 12

NSC past papers and marking guidelines

Practise with IEB NSC past papers under exam conditions. Use the official marking guidelines (available on the IEB website) to see how marks are awarded. Identify question types and cognitive levels so your child prepares for the full range.

  3. 3

    As per school deadlines

    School-based assessment (SBA)

Complete SBA tasks with support on planning, structure, and analysis. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.

  4. 4

    Months before finals

    Final revision and exam readiness

Target weak areas and do full past papers under timed conditions. Focus on time management, question interpretation, and the presentation examiners expect. Avoid cramming; consistent revision over months works best.

Tactics

  • Use IEB NSC past papers and marking guidelines from the IEB website (Resources) or your child's school.

  • Study in blocks (e.g. 50 minutes) with breaks; tackle harder subjects when you are freshest.

  • Create a revision timetable and stick to it; start at least 2-3 months before exams.

  • Practise under exam conditions: time limits, no notes, quiet environment.

  • Ask for help early; do not leave concept gaps or SBA to the last minute.

Recommended approach

The South African Department of Basic Education and IEB recommend starting exam preparation early, using past papers, and studying in a structured way. Create a timetable and dedicate 3-4 hours daily to revision in the run-up to exams.

Use past papers and marking guidelines so you know the format and how marks are awarded. Study harder subjects first when your child is fresh, and use active techniques (summaries, practice questions) rather than passive reading.

Avoid cramming in the final days; it increases stress and does not build long-term understanding. Our tutors can align this approach to your subjects and help your child target the topics and question types that will make the biggest difference to their results.

FAQs

What does an IEB maths tutor cover?
An IEB maths tutor covers the Grade 10 to 12 syllabus for both papers, with past-paper practice in the IEB style. For Grade 8 and 9 we have a separate IEB maths page, and AP Mathematics has its own tutors.
Is IEB maths different from CAPS maths?
Both follow the national curriculum, so the content is the same. The IEB sets and marks its own papers, so the questions are written differently from DBE papers. A tutor who has prepared learners for IEB papers knows the question style your child will face.
Can you help with AP Mathematics?
Yes. We tutor IEB Advanced Programme Mathematics, which learners take alongside core Mathematics. Tell us which AP modules your child is writing so we can match the right tutor.
When should my child start IEB maths tutoring?
A term or more before the finals gives time to fix gaps and work through several past papers. Learners who start later still benefit from focused revision on the topics that lose the most marks.
