What you need to know about exam preparation
What this support covers, and how the lessons work.
Exam preparation is practice for one named exam. It is not a subject of its own. IEB papers and the National Senior Certificate papers set by the Department of Basic Education are different exams. Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS, and Cambridge International A Level are separate qualifications. The IB Diploma is not the Middle Years Programme. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is not Pearson Edexcel International A Level.
IELTS, PTE Academic, the SAT, the ACT, and AP are not school subjects either. IELTS has Academic and General Training. PTE Academic is scored from 10 to 90. The digital SAT total is 400 to 1600. The ACT composite is English, Math, and Reading, from 1 to 36, and Science is optional. Each AP course is its own exam, scored from 1 to 5.
Lessons use the format of the exam you name. A past paper from a different board is a different exam. We do not mix them. We work on timing, how to read the question, and how marks are awarded. We do not write the exam, and we do not enter your child for it.
If the exam has a published date, bring it. We do not invent dates.
What we offer
The subject and the exam, named before the first lesson
Practice in the format of that paper
Timing and how marks are awarded
No mix of papers from different boards
Preparing for an exam?
Exam preparation follows one exam. IEB and DBE NSC papers are different. So are Cambridge IGCSE and A Level, the IB Diploma and the MYP, and tests such as IELTS, PTE Academic, the SAT, and the ACT.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Practising with papers from the wrong board.
We ask which exam it is, then stay on that paper.
Leaving technique until the week of the exam.
Timing and the way marks are awarded are part of the lessons, not a last-day add-on.
Asking a tutor to write the answers that will be submitted.
We explain and give feedback. We do not write assessed work.

What we cover
What we cover for exam preparation
What a tutor helps with. We do not do the work for you.
The exam you name
Say the exact exam: IEB or DBE NSC, Cambridge IGCSE or A Level, IB Diploma or MYP, Pearson Edexcel International GCSE or International A Level, IELTS Academic or General Training, PTE Academic, the SAT, the ACT, or a named AP course. We prepare for that one.
Past questions from that paper
Practice uses questions in the style of that exam. A Cambridge paper is not an IEB paper, and an SAT section is not an ACT section.
Timing and technique
Lessons include how long each part takes and what a complete answer looks like on that paper.
What we do not do
We do not write the exam, enter your child for it, or invent the date. Assessed schoolwork stays the student's. We give feedback only.
Common mistakes
And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them
Practising with papers from the wrong board.
Study strategy
How lessons work for exam preparation
Name the task, then work on that. We do not do it for you.
- 1
Before the first lesson
Name the task
Tell us the subject, the curriculum if there is one, and the deadline. Bring the brief or the homework.
- 2
Before you book
Meet the tutor
The free Meet and Greet is a conversation. You decide whether the tutor understands the task.
- 3
While the task is open
Weekly lessons
Lessons explain the work and practise the next step. Your child does the piece that will be handed in.
- 4
Before the deadline
Feedback
The tutor comments on your child's draft or working. We do not rewrite it.
Tactics
Bring the question, the worksheet, or the university page.
Say if this is assessed work.
Book a subject tutor as well if the gap is the syllabus.
Recommended approach
Start when the task is set, not the night before it is due. A short run of lessons can still help if the deadline is close, as long as your child is doing the writing.
What your child will achieve
What you can expect from exam preparation tutoring
Realistic outcomes when your child commits to the process
Practice on the exam your child is sitting
A clearer sense of timing and what earns marks
No mix-up between boards or tests
Feedback on your child's own work
A tutor explains and gives feedback. We do not do the homework, essay, research, or application for you, and we do not guarantee a grade or a place.
Frequently asked questions about exam preparation
Which exams can you prepare for?
Tell us the subject and the exact exam. IEB papers are not the Department of Basic Education NSC papers. Cambridge IGCSE is not Cambridge International A Level. The IB Diploma is not the MYP. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is not International A Level. IELTS, PTE Academic, the SAT, the ACT, and AP are separate again. We do not treat them as one exam.
Do you use past papers?
Yes, when they exist for that exam, and only for that exam. We do not swap in papers from another board.
Do you enter students for the exam?
No. Schools, exam centres, or the test provider handle entries. We prepare your child for the paper.
