What you need to know about university admissions

What this support covers, and how the lessons work.

University admissions support is help with an application, not a promise of a place. Rules differ by country and by university. We use what that university has published for the course you name. If a score or subject rule is not published, we do not invent it.

For many South African public universities, selection uses an Admission Point Score worked out from NSC results, plus the subjects that course asks for. The formula is the university's. A UK application may ask for a personal statement. A US application may ask for essays. Those are not the same document, and neither is an IELTS essay.

We give feedback on your child's draft. We do not write the application or submit it. Tests a course may also ask for, such as the SAT, the ACT, IELTS, or PTE Academic, are a separate preparation.

We do not say an offer is likely. Offers are the university's decision.

What we offer

  • The university's published requirements, not a guess

  • Feedback on a personal statement or other answers

  • Subject choices, when they are still open

  • We do not submit the application or guarantee a place

Working on a university application?

Admissions support follows the university's own requirements. Bring their page. We help you read it and draft answers. We do not submit the application.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Copying a statement from an example online.

We work from your child's own subjects, activities, and the course they are applying for.

  • Assuming one country's rules apply everywhere.

We start from the university you named, not from a generic checklist.

  • Leaving a required test until after the application deadline.

If the course asks for the SAT, the ACT, IELTS, or PTE, we say so early so that preparation is a separate plan.

What we cover

What we cover for university admissions

What a tutor helps with. We do not do the work for you.

  • The requirements

We read the page the university has published: subjects, grades or scores, and deadlines. We do not fill gaps with guesses.

  • Subject choices

Where choices are still open, we look at what that university asks for. We do not pick a career for your child.

  • Written answers

Personal statements and short answers: structure and whether the draft answers the prompt. Your child writes it.

  • Tests

The SAT, the ACT, IELTS, and PTE Academic are separate preparations. An application lesson does not replace those.

Common mistakes

And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them

Copying a statement from an example online.

We work from your child's own subjects, activities, and the course they are applying for.

Assuming one country's rules apply everywhere.

We start from the university you named, not from a generic checklist.

If the course asks for the SAT, the ACT, IELTS, or PTE, we say so early so that preparation is a separate plan.

Study strategy

How lessons work for university admissions

Name the task, then work on that. We do not do it for you.

  1. 1

    Before the first lesson

    Name the task

Tell us the subject, the curriculum if there is one, and the deadline. Bring the brief or the homework.

  2. 2

    Before you book

    Meet the tutor

The free Meet and Greet is a conversation. You decide whether the tutor understands the task.

  3. 3

    While the task is open

    Weekly lessons

Lessons explain the work and practise the next step. Your child does the piece that will be handed in.

  4. 4

    Before the deadline

    Feedback

The tutor comments on your child's draft or working. We do not rewrite it.

Tactics

  • Bring the question, the worksheet, or the university page.

  • Say if this is assessed work.

  • Book a subject tutor as well if the gap is the syllabus.

Recommended approach

Start when the task is set, not the night before it is due. A short run of lessons can still help if the deadline is close, as long as your child is doing the writing.

What your child will achieve

What you can expect from university admissions tutoring

Realistic outcomes when your child commits to the process

  • A reading of the requirements the university has published

  • A draft personal statement or answers in your child's words

  • A list of what is still missing, including any test

  • No submitted application and no promised offer

A tutor explains and gives feedback. We do not do the homework, essay, research, or application for you, and we do not guarantee a grade or a place.

Frequently asked questions about university admissions

Will you write the personal statement?

No. We help with a plan and with feedback on your child's draft. The statement they submit is theirs.

Can you guarantee an offer?

No. Offers are the university's decision. We help you understand the published requirements and prepare the application materials.

Do South African universities use a personal statement?

Many public universities select with an Admission Point Score from NSC results and subject requirements. The formula belongs to that university. A personal statement is more typical of UK applications, and essays are more typical of US applications. We follow the course you name.
