What you need to know about academic writing

What this support covers, and how the lessons work.

Academic writing support is for essays and other extended writing set by a school or a programme. Lessons work on the question, the structure, the evidence, and clear sentences.

Bring the task. A history essay, an English essay, and a science report are not the same piece of writing. We follow the one that was set.

We plan and give feedback on your child's draft. We do not write the essay, the internal assessment, the Extended Essay, or any other assessed task.

IELTS writing and a university personal statement are different tasks. Tell us if that is what you need, so we do not treat them as a school essay.

What we offer

  • The task and the subject, brought to the lesson

  • Structure, argument, and evidence

  • Feedback on your child's draft

  • We do not write the piece

Stuck on an essay or a piece of writing?

Academic writing lessons work on structure, argument, and evidence for the task that was set. The student writes it. We do not.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Answering a question that was not set.

We read the task first and keep the plan tied to it.

  • Handing the draft to a tutor to rewrite.

Feedback points to what to change. Your child makes the changes.

  • Using one essay shape for every subject.

We follow the subject and the mark scheme or criteria for that task.

What we cover

What we cover for academic writing

What a tutor helps with. We do not do the work for you.

  • The question

We start from the wording of the task, including command words, so the answer stays on what was asked.

  • Structure

A plan with a line of argument, paragraphs, and a close. The shape follows the subject, not a single template for every essay.

  • Evidence

How to choose a point and support it. We do not invent sources.

  • Drafts

Feedback on your child's writing. The words in the submitted piece stay theirs.

Common mistakes

And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them

Answering a question that was not set.

We read the task first and keep the plan tied to it.

Handing the draft to a tutor to rewrite.

Feedback points to what to change. Your child makes the changes.

Using one essay shape for every subject.

We follow the subject and the mark scheme or criteria for that task.

Study strategy

How lessons work for academic writing

Name the task, then work on that. We do not do it for you.

  1. 1

    Before the first lesson

    Name the task

Tell us the subject, the curriculum if there is one, and the deadline. Bring the brief or the homework.

  2. 2

    Before you book

    Meet the tutor

The free Meet and Greet is a conversation. You decide whether the tutor understands the task.

  3. 3

    While the task is open

    Weekly lessons

Lessons explain the work and practise the next step. Your child does the piece that will be handed in.

  4. 4

    Before the deadline

    Feedback

The tutor comments on your child's draft or working. We do not rewrite it.

Tactics

  • Bring the question, the worksheet, or the university page.

  • Say if this is assessed work.

  • Book a subject tutor as well if the gap is the syllabus.

Recommended approach

Start when the task is set, not the night before it is due. A short run of lessons can still help if the deadline is close, as long as your child is doing the writing.

What your child will achieve

What you can expect from academic writing tutoring

Realistic outcomes when your child commits to the process

  • A plan that matches the question

  • Clearer paragraphs and evidence

  • Feedback your child can apply to the next draft

  • The submitted writing remains their own

A tutor explains and gives feedback. We do not do the homework, essay, research, or application for you, and we do not guarantee a grade or a place.

Frequently asked questions about academic writing

Will you write the essay?

No. We help with the plan and with feedback on a draft. Your child writes the work that is submitted.

Does this cover the IB Extended Essay?

We can explain the criteria and comment on a plan or a draft. We do not write the Extended Essay, a TOK essay, or an internal assessment.

Is this IELTS writing?

No. IELTS Academic and General Training writing are a language test. A school essay is a different task. Tell us which one you need.
