What families say

Tertius has been an absolute pleasure to work with. He is incredibly knowledgeable in Business Studies and Economics, he is enthusiastic about his subjects, and that energy is contagious and really motivates my child to engage. He explains concepts clearly and is very easy to talk to. Highly recommend!

Amaranta, Parent

Good morning!! I don’t know where you found Manuel but my goodness he is a treat!!! He is funny and kind and uses all kinds of tricks and fun things to teach German. He picked up my daughter’s hobbies and brings that into the lesson and conversation. My daughter is like an energy bunny after each session, and she actually feels more confident for her German university interview. I know I’ve said this before, but you guys are a Godsend!

Carina, Parent

What you need to know about CAPS Maths Literacy

What you need to know and how we support your child

The IEB (Independent Examinations Board) is a globally recognised, ethical assessment agency rooted in Africa. It advances quality teaching and learning through innovative and relevant assessments and conducts the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations for Grade 12, aligned to the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). At Global Tutors we specialise in CAPS Maths Literacy Tutoring and support IEB and NSC students through syllabus-aligned tutoring and exam preparation. We match your child with a tutor who fits their level and goals.

CAPS Maths Literacy Tutoring requires clear problem-solving, logical structure, and fluency with the formulae and methods examiners expect. We build confidence through worked examples and past-paper practice.

Whether your child is in Grade 10, 11, or 12, our tutors help your child build strong foundations and then focus on exam technique, past papers, and the question styles used by the IEB for CAPS Maths Literacy. The IEB publishes NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines and past papers with marking guidelines; we use these to shape revision and practise.

Our tutors understand the IEB and NSC assessment structure: school-based assessment (SBA) and final examinations. Sessions are one-to-one and scheduled around your school commitments and time zone.

We align to CAPS and IEB NSC guidelines so your child is ready for both SBA and final exams.

With CAPS Maths Literacy, we prioritise clear working and step-by-step reasoning so examiners can award full marks.

Common mistakes

Common Mistakes

And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them

Answering the question you expected rather than the one set.

We practise interrogating the question: identifying key terms, command words, and scope so your child's answer stays on track.

Vague or general answers without specific evidence or examples.

We work on selecting and integrating precise evidence, quotes, or data so your child's arguments are well supported.

Weak structure: no clear introduction, development, or conclusion.

We use plans and outlines so your child builds a clear argument. We practise timed essays so structure becomes automatic.

Poor time management: spending too long on one part and rushing the rest.

We allocate time per section in past papers and practise under exam conditions so your child learns to pace themselves.

In coursework or IAs: unclear methodology or insufficient critical reflection.

We help your child plan methods and reflection so their work meets the criteria. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.

Not reading the mark scheme so your child misses what examiners reward.

We use mark schemes and example responses so your child sees exactly how marks are awarded and what to include.

Study strategy

Study plan and exam strategy for CAPS Maths Literacy

A clear path from your syllabus or specification to exam day

1

Grade 10-12

Syllabus and CAPS alignment

Cover the curriculum systematically using CAPS and the IEB NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines. Build strong foundations in core topics so your child can apply knowledge in exams. We use past papers and marking guidelines to show what is expected.

2

From Grade 11 or early Grade 12

NSC past papers and marking guidelines

Practise with IEB NSC past papers under exam conditions. Use the official marking guidelines (available on the IEB website) to see how marks are awarded. Identify question types and cognitive levels so your child prepares for the full range.

3

As per school deadlines

School-based assessment (SBA)

Complete SBA tasks with support on planning, structure, and analysis. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.

4

Months before finals

Final revision and exam readiness

Target weak areas and do full past papers under timed conditions. Focus on time management, question interpretation, and the presentation examiners expect. Avoid cramming; consistent revision over months works best.

Tactics

  • Use IEB NSC past papers and marking guidelines from the IEB website (Resources) or your child's school.
  • Study in blocks (e.g. 50 minutes) with breaks; tackle harder subjects when you are freshest.
  • Create a revision timetable and stick to it; start at least 2-3 months before exams.
  • Practise under exam conditions: time limits, no notes, quiet environment.
  • Ask for help early; do not leave concept gaps or SBA to the last minute.

Recommended approach

The South African Department of Basic Education and IEB recommend starting exam preparation early, using past papers, and studying in a structured way. Create a timetable and dedicate 3-4 hours daily to revision in the run-up to exams.

Use past papers and marking guidelines so you know the format and how marks are awarded. Study harder subjects first when your child is fresh, and use active techniques (summaries, practice questions) rather than passive reading.

Avoid cramming in the final days; it increases stress and does not build long-term understanding. Our tutors can align this approach to your subjects and help your child target the topics and question types that will make the biggest difference to their results.

What your child will achieve

A learning pace and schedule that suit your child

Outcomes depend on commitment, starting level, and goals. We focus on sustainable progress and exam readiness where relevant.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about CAPS Maths Literacy

Common questions and answers

Who are the tutors for CAPS Maths Literacy?+

Our tutors are qualified educators with experience in CAPS Maths Literacy. We match you with someone who fits your child's level, goals, and schedule. All tutors are vetted and supported by Global Tutors. You can see tutor profiles and specialisms when you search so you choose someone aligned to your child's curriculum and subject.

How are CAPS Maths Literacy Tutoring sessions delivered?+

Sessions are delivered on our interactive online learning platform. Your child can learn from home or anywhere with a stable internet connection. We use a dedicated platform designed for one-to-one learning so your child can focus on the lesson. Your child will need a device with a camera and microphone; many students use a laptop or tablet. No special software is required beyond the link we send you.

Do you support IEB and NSC exams?+

Yes. Our tutors are familiar with the IEB and the National Senior Certificate (NSC). We use CAPS and the IEB NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines and past papers with marking guidelines. We support school-based assessment (SBA) and final exam preparation so your child is ready for both components.

How do I get matched with a CAPS Maths Literacy tutor?+

We hand pick the best tutor for your child's needs. Tell us your child's subject, level, curriculum (e.g. IB (International Baccalaureate), Cambridge, IEB), and goals (e.g. exam prep, coursework help, or general support). We recommend a tutor and you book your child's first lesson. If the fit is not right, our Fit-First Guarantee lets you request a replacement so you can try another tutor for your child at no extra cost.

What if the first CAPS Maths Literacy Tutoring tutor is not the right fit?+

We offer a Fit-First Guarantee: if your child's first lesson is not the right match, we'll replace your child's tutor - no questions asked. The replacement must be for the same subject and curriculum. This way you can focus on finding the right tutor without worrying about commitment after one session.

Where can I find IEB past papers and resources?+

The IEB website (ieb.co.za) publishes NSC Past Papers and NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines under Resources. We use these in sessions to practise exam-style questions and show your child how marks are awarded. Your school may also provide past papers; we can work with whatever materials your child has access to.

When should we start for Matric exams?+

Starting in Grade 11 or early Grade 12 gives time to build concepts and practise past papers. Many students also use tutoring for intensive revision in the final months. We can tailor a plan to your schedule and target your child's weakest subjects or topics first.

Can I change CAPS Maths Literacy Tutoring session times?+

Yes. Sessions are scheduled around your availability. You can arrange regular weekly slots or book ad-hoc lessons depending on your package and tutor availability. Many students have a fixed time each week; others prefer to book as they go, especially during exam revision.

Do you offer group sessions for CAPS Maths Literacy?+

Our standard offering is one-to-one tutoring so that sessions are tailored to your child. If you are interested in small-group support for your child (e.g. siblings or friends), contact us and we can discuss options.
