Cover the curriculum systematically using CAPS and the IEB NSC Subject Assessment Guidelines. Build strong foundations in core topics so your child can apply knowledge in exams. We use past papers and marking guidelines to show what is expected.
From Grade 11 or early Grade 12
NSC past papers and marking guidelines
Practise with IEB NSC past papers under exam conditions. Use the official marking guidelines (available on the IEB website) to see how marks are awarded. Identify question types and cognitive levels so your child prepares for the full range.
As per school deadlines
School-based assessment (SBA)
Complete SBA tasks with support on planning, structure, and analysis. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.
Months before finals
Final revision and exam readiness
Target weak areas and do full past papers under timed conditions. Focus on time management, question interpretation, and the presentation examiners expect. Avoid cramming; consistent revision over months works best.
Tactics
- Use IEB NSC past papers and marking guidelines from the IEB website (Resources) or your child's school.
- Study in blocks (e.g. 50 minutes) with breaks; tackle harder subjects when you are freshest.
- Create a revision timetable and stick to it; start at least 2-3 months before exams.
- Practise under exam conditions: time limits, no notes, quiet environment.
- Ask for help early; do not leave concept gaps or SBA to the last minute.
Recommended approach
The South African Department of Basic Education and IEB recommend starting exam preparation early, using past papers, and studying in a structured way. Create a timetable and dedicate 3-4 hours daily to revision in the run-up to exams.
Use past papers and marking guidelines so you know the format and how marks are awarded. Study harder subjects first when your child is fresh, and use active techniques (summaries, practice questions) rather than passive reading.
Avoid cramming in the final days; it increases stress and does not build long-term understanding. Our tutors can align this approach to your subjects and help your child target the topics and question types that will make the biggest difference to their results.
