Measurement in Grade 11 is assessed with Euclidean geometry in Paper 2. For prisms and cylinders you must know the formulae yourself, and questions usually involve a real object such as a tank or a box.
Right prisms and cylinders
A right prism has two identical, parallel end faces joined by rectangles.
- Rectangular prism: ,
- Triangular prism:
- Cylinder: , (closed)
Example. A box 5 cm by 4 cm by 3 cm: cm³ and cm².
Example. A cylinder with cm and cm: cm³.
Units: 1 m³ = 1 000 litres, and 1 cm³ = 1 mℓ.
Composite objects
A composite object is made of two or more simple shapes.
- Volume: add the volumes of the parts (or subtract a hole).
- Surface area: add only the faces on the outside. Faces where the parts join are hidden.
Example. A closed cylindrical water tank with diameter 1,2 m and height 1,5 m stands on the ground:
- Volume: m³, about 1 696 litres
- Outside area to paint (curved surface and lid, but not the base on the ground): m²
- If the tank were open at the top, you would paint only the curved surface: m²
Read the wording carefully: "open", "no lid" and "standing on the ground" all change which faces count.
Key terms
Right prism
A solid with two identical parallel bases joined by rectangular faces at right angles.
Surface area
The total area of all the outer faces.
Volume
The amount of space inside a solid.
Composite object
A solid made by combining simpler solids.
Common mistakes
Using the diameter instead of the radius.
Counting hidden faces in the surface area of a composite object.
Mixing units, such as metres and centimetres in one calculation.
Forgetting to convert cubic metres to litres when the answer needs litres.

FAQs
Are prism formulae given in the IEB exam?
No. You must know the formulae for right prisms and cylinders. Formulae for cones, spheres and pyramids are usually given.
How many litres are in a cubic metre?
1 000 litres. Also, 1 cm³ is 1 millilitre.
How do I find the surface area of a composite object?
Add the areas of the faces you can see from outside. Leave out faces where the parts are joined.
