When data is grouped into class intervals, histograms and frequency polygons show its shape, and you can estimate the mean and find the modal class. These graphs also lead into ogives and the five-number summary.
Grouped data
Large data sets are grouped into class intervals, usually of equal width, such as . The frequency is the number of values in each class.
Example. Heights (cm) of 40 plants:
- : 6
- : 10
- : 12
- : 8
- : 4
The modal class is the class with the highest frequency: .
Drawing histograms and frequency polygons
Histogram
- Class boundaries on the horizontal axis, frequency on the vertical axis. This works when the classes have equal widths, which is the case in school questions.
- Bars touch, because the data is continuous.
- Label both axes and give the graph a heading.
Frequency polygon
- Plot the frequency at the midpoint of each class.
- Join the points with straight lines.
- Close the polygon by adding a point with frequency 0 at the midpoint of an empty class at each end.
For the plant data, the midpoints are 15, 25, 35, 45 and 55, and the polygon starts at and ends at .
Estimating the mean and modal class
Use each class midpoint as the value for every item in that class:
Example.
This is an estimate, because the actual values inside each class are unknown.
The median class contains the middle value. With 40 values, the 20th and 21st values lie in (cumulative frequencies 6, 16, 28).
Key terms
Class interval
A range of values grouping the data.
Frequency
How many values fall in a class.
Midpoint
The middle value of a class interval.
Modal class
The class with the highest frequency.
Common mistakes
Leaving gaps between histogram bars.
Plotting a frequency polygon at class boundaries instead of midpoints.
Dividing by the number of classes instead of the total frequency.
Calling the estimated mean exact.

FAQs
Why do histogram bars touch?
Because the data is continuous: one class ends exactly where the next begins.
Where do I plot points for a frequency polygon?
At the midpoint of each class, with zero-frequency points added at each end.
How do I find the modal class?
It is the class with the highest frequency.
