Grade 11 adds two new transformations to the trig graphs you met in Grade 10: changing the period with and shifting horizontally with . You need to sketch these graphs accurately and read solutions of equations and inequalities from them.

The effect of k on the period

For and , the period is (). For , it is .

  • : period 120°
  • : period 720°
  • : period 90°, with asymptotes every 90° starting at

A larger squeezes the graph horizontally.

The effect of p on horizontal shift

For , and , the graph moves units left if and right if .

Example. is moved 45° left. Its maximum moves from to , and its -intercepts from and to and .

Shift the key points (intercepts, maximum and minimum) first, then draw the curve through them.

Amplitude and vertical shift

For (and similarly for cosine):

  • Amplitude
  • Vertical shift moves the graph up
  • Range:

Example. has amplitude 2 and range . Its -intercepts are where : and in .

Tangent graphs have no amplitude, because they have no maximum or minimum.

Reading solutions from graphs

With two graphs on the same axes:

  • Solutions of are the -values of the intersection points.
  • where is above .
  • has as many solutions as the times the line cuts the graph.

Example. and meet where : , so . In they meet at and , and for .

Key terms

Period

The horizontal length of one full cycle.

Amplitude

Half the distance between the maximum and minimum values.

Horizontal shift

A translation of the graph left or right.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying the period by instead of dividing.

  • Shifting to the right.

  • Giving an amplitude for a tangent graph.

FAQs

How do I find the period of a trig graph?

Divide 360° by for sine and cosine, or 180° by for tangent.

Which way does sin(x + 30°) shift?

30° to the left. A plus inside the bracket moves the graph left.
