The discriminant tells you what kind of roots a quadratic has without solving it. This idea comes back in Grade 12 functions and in tangent questions, so it is worth understanding well.

The discriminant

For , the discriminant is

It is the expression under the root in the quadratic formula, so its sign decides whether the formula gives real answers.

Real, non-real, equal, unequal, rational and irrational roots

  • : non-real roots
  • : real, equal (and rational) roots
  • and a perfect square: real, unequal, rational roots
  • and not a perfect square: real, unequal, irrational roots

(For equations with rational coefficients.)

Examples.

  • : , equal roots ()
  • : , real, unequal, rational roots
  • : , real, unequal, irrational roots

On a graph, tells you whether the parabola cuts the -axis twice, touches it, or misses it.

Finding unknown values for given root types

Write the condition on and solve for the unknown.

  • Equal roots:
  • Real roots:
  • Non-real roots:

Example. For which does have real roots?

For the equation to be quadratic, as well.

Proving roots are always real. Show that is never negative, for example by writing it as a square. If the coefficients are rational and is a perfect square, the roots are rational as well. With a letter in the coefficients, that only holds when the letter stands for a rational number.

What is the difference between real and non-real roots?

Real roots are real numbers, so the parabola meets the -axis. Non-real roots mean it does not.
