The parabola y = a(x + p)^2 + q

Functions and graphs · Updated 12 October 2026

In Grade 11 the parabola is written as , which shows the turning point straight away. Sketching parabolas and finding their equations is a large part of Paper 1, and it is the base for cubic graphs and calculus in Grade 12.

The effect of a, p and q

For :

  • controls shape and direction. opens upwards (minimum); opens downwards (maximum). A larger gives a narrower graph.
  • shifts the graph horizontally: units left if , right if .
  • shifts the graph vertically: units up if .

Example. is shifted 1 unit right and 8 units down. It opens upwards and is narrower than .

Turning point, axis of symmetry and intercepts

For :

  • Turning point:
  • Axis of symmetry:
  • Range: if , or if
  • -intercept: let
  • -intercepts: let and solve

Example.

  • Turning point , axis , range
  • -intercept:
  • -intercepts: , so , giving or

The -intercepts are symmetrical about the axis: and are both 2 units from .

Sketching parabolas

  1. Decide the shape from the sign of .
  2. Plot the turning point.
  3. Plot the -intercept and its mirror image in the axis of symmetry.
  4. Plot the -intercepts, if there are any.
  5. Draw a smooth curve and label every point with coordinates.

If the equation is given as , find the turning point with , or complete the square.

Example. . Turning point , -intercept 5, -intercepts 1 and 5.

Finding the equation from a graph

Turning point given. Use , substitute the turning point, then use another point to find .

Example. Turning point , passing through :

-intercepts given. Use and another point to find .

Check your equation with a point you did not use.

Key terms

Parabola

The graph of a quadratic function.

Turning point

The highest or lowest point of a parabola.

Axis of symmetry

The vertical line through the turning point that divides the parabola into mirror images.

Range

The set of -values the function takes.

Common mistakes

  • Writing the turning point of as .

  • Shifting to the right.

  • Forgetting the mirror image of the -intercept when sketching.

  • Giving the range with instead of .

FAQs

How do I find the turning point of a parabola?

In the form , it is . In the form , use and substitute to find .

What changes in Grade 12 for parabolas?

In Grade 12 you find turning points with calculus and work with inverses of , but the sketching skills are the same.

How many marks are functions worth in Grade 11?

Functions are usually the biggest section of Paper 1, often around 45 marks out of 150.
