Functions and graphs · Updated 13 October 2026

Exponential graphs show quantities that grow or decay by a constant factor, like populations or investments. In Grade 11 you sketch , find its asymptote and intercepts, and work out the equation from given points.

Exponential graphs y = ab^(x + p) + q · Introduction

The effect of a, b, p and q

For , with and :

  • : the graph of increases. : it decreases.
  • : reflects the graph in the asymptote, so increasing becomes decreasing.
  • : shifts the graph horizontally ( units left if ).
  • : shifts the graph and the asymptote vertically.

Example. increases, with asymptote .

Asymptote, intercepts and sketching

  • Asymptote:
  • Range: if , or if
  • -intercept: let
  • -intercept: let ; write both sides with the same base

Example.

  • -intercept:
  • -intercept:

Not every exponential graph has an -intercept. If and , the graph stays above the -axis.

To sketch: draw the asymptote as a dotted line, plot the intercepts and one more point, and draw a smooth curve approaching the asymptote.
