Functions and graphs · Updated 13 October 2026

Many Grade 11 function questions give two graphs on the same axes and ask what they show together. You find where they meet, read off domain and range, measure distances between them and solve inequalities from the sketch.

Interpreting and combining graphs · Introduction

Points of intersection

Set the two equations equal and solve. Then substitute to find .

Example. and

The graphs meet at and .

Domain and range

  • Domain: the -values the function uses.
  • Range: the -values it produces.

Example. has domain and range .

Restricted domain. For , the highest point is the turning point and the lowest is at , where . So the range is .

When the domain is restricted, check the turning point and both endpoints.

Vertical and horizontal distances between graphs

Vertical distance at a given is top minus bottom:

Example. Between (top) and for :

is a parabola with its maximum at : units.

Horizontal distance is measured between -values at the same , such as the distance between the two -intercepts of a parabola.

Reading inequalities from graphs

  • : where is above .
  • : where is below the -axis.
  • : where both graphs are on the same side of the -axis.

Example. For and above:

  • for
  • : both positive for , and both negative for . So , .

Use the intercepts and points of intersection as boundaries.

Common mistakes

  • Reading inequalities off the -axis instead of the -axis.

  • Forgetting the endpoints of a restricted domain when finding the range.

  • Subtracting bottom minus top for a distance.

  • Including -values where one graph is undefined.
