What you need to know about Cognitive & Learning Assessments
What you need to know and how we support your child
Cognitive and learning assessments help identify how a student learns best and where they may need support. Global Tutors does not conduct these assessments. We connect you with independently HPCSA-registered practitioners who conduct assessments (e.g. cognitive, literacy, numeracy) and provide clear, actionable reports and recommendations directly to you. Whether an assessment can validly be done remotely is the practitioner's professional decision - our platform may be used for scheduling or feedback meetings when they agree it is appropriate.
The practitioner helps families and schools understand a student's cognitive profile, learning style, and any barriers to learning. This can support applications for accommodations, inform teaching strategies, or clarify the need for further support such as educational psychology or one-to-one teaching. We do not provide subject teaching or assessment services ourselves.
Practitioners follow best practice in assessment and reporting. You receive a clear summary of findings and recommendations for home and school from the practitioner, so you can take informed next steps. The practitioner sets and charges their own professional fees.

Common mistakes
Common concerns and how we address them
And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them
Unclear what the assessment will involve.
The registered practitioner explains the process, duration, and what to expect before you start, so you and your child are prepared and comfortable.
Worry about how results will be used.
The practitioner focuses on recommendations that are practical and constructive, and discusses how you want to use the report (e.g. school, accommodations).
Not sure what to do after the assessment.
The practitioner provides clear next-step guidance. We can also help you find follow-up support (e.g. educational psychology, one-to-one teaching) where relevant.
Concern about the child feeling tested or judged.
Practitioners typically frame the assessment in an age-appropriate way and focus on strengths as well as areas to support. The goal is clarity, not labelling.
Unsure whether an assessment is needed at all.
We discuss your concerns and goals and help you find a practitioner who can advise whether a full assessment or a shorter screening is more appropriate.
Study strategy
How the Cognitive & Learning Assessments process works
A clear path from your syllabus or specification to exam day
Before assessment
Initial discussion
We explain the matching process and what practitioners typically cover. The practitioner explains duration, format, and what you will receive.
As scheduled
Assessment
The registered practitioner conducts the assessment. Whether it can validly be done remotely is their professional decision. Our platform may be used for scheduling or feedback when they agree - it is not the assessment instrument.
After assessment
Report and feedback
You receive a report and a feedback session from the practitioner, who explains results, recommendations, and next steps.
Tactics
- Ensure your child is rested and comfortable for the assessment.
- Share any relevant history (e.g. previous assessments, school concerns).
- Ask the practitioner how to share the report with school if needed.
Recommended approach
We start by agreeing what you need from the assessment - for example, a report for school, accommodation applications, or clarity on learning style. We then help you find a registered practitioner who conducts the assessment and provides clear, actionable feedback and next-step guidance.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions about Cognitive & Learning Assessments
Common questions and answers
What are cognitive and learning assessments?+−
These are structured assessments that help identify how a student learns, including cognitive strengths and any barriers (e.g. in literacy or numeracy). Results inform recommendations for support and accommodations. Global Tutors does not conduct assessments - independently registered practitioners do. We do not provide subject teaching.
How are cognitive and learning assessments delivered?+−
Assessments and feedback sessions are delivered by the registered practitioner. Whether a cognitive assessment can validly be done remotely is the practitioner's professional call. Do you provide cognitive assessment reports for schools?+−

How do I get matched with a cognitive assessment specialist?+−

Are cognitive and learning assessments the same as subject teaching?+−
No. Assessments focus on identifying learning profile and barriers and are performed by registered practitioners. For subject teaching, we have a separate teaching service and can help you find the right option.
