“Alison always had a great connection with her students and was always loyal and trustworthy with them. While they would easily confide in her, they were always clear on the boundaries. Ali was considered as wise due to knowing her students and understanding some of their difficulties.”

How tutoring helps homeschooled students in South Africa

A subject tutor supports the programme you already run at home. We do not take it over.

In South Africa, home education is the parent's programme. You apply to your provincial education department to register a learner for home education. Global Tutors does not register your child, and a tutor does not become the educator of record. You choose the curriculum. We teach the subjects you book, one to one, online.

Cambridge homeschool in South Africa usually means Cambridge IGCSE first, then Cambridge International AS and A Level if the learner continues. Those are separate qualifications. Tell us the exact syllabus: IGCSE Mathematics Core or Extended, English First Language, English as a Second Language, or Literature. A tutor works to that syllabus and uses past papers and the mark scheme in the lesson. We do not host the papers, and we are not an exam centre. Exam entries are made with a Cambridge exam centre.

Some families follow CAPS at home, often with a distance curriculum. Lessons then follow the CAPS content for that grade. Home Language and First Additional Language are different subjects. Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy are different subjects. If the aim is the National Senior Certificate, the papers are set by the Department of Basic Education, and whether your child can sit them depends on how they are registered. Tutoring does not enrol them.

IEB examinations are written by learners at IEB schools. Leaving an IEB school to homeschool does not by itself keep an IEB exam entry. If your programme still uses IEB material, say so when you enquire so we match the right tutor. We will not treat IEB, CAPS, and Cambridge as the same paper.

A homeschool tutor in South Africa is most useful for the subject you do not want to teach yourself. That is often mathematics, physical sciences, or English. The lesson is a fixed point in the week: explanation, questions, and exam practice. You can book one subject or several, and siblings can have different tutors. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write portfolios, assignments, or any assessed task.

What we offer

  • You keep the curriculum; we teach the subjects you choose

  • Cambridge IGCSE, AS and A Level, or CAPS

  • One-to-one online lessons, with a free Meet and Greet first

  • Past-paper practice for the board your child will actually sit

  • You remain the home educator

Need a tutor for a subject you teach at home?

Homeschool days stall when one subject is beyond what you want to teach. A specialist can take that subject without taking over the rest of the programme.

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • You can teach the humanities, but mathematics has stalled

A maths tutor works to your syllabus - Cambridge Core or Extended, or CAPS Mathematics, not a generic worksheet.

  • Past papers sit unused because you are not sure how they are marked

The tutor works through them with the mark scheme for that syllabus, in the lesson.

  • Without a school bell, one subject never gets a fixed time

A regular online lesson gives that subject a set slot. The rest of the day stays with you.

  • You left a school and the new curriculum does not match last year's notes

We match the tutor to the curriculum you are on now, and we do not mix CAPS and Cambridge papers.

  • You do not want to hand the whole homeschool to someone else

Book one subject. You stay the home educator. We do not register your child.

What we cover

What a homeschool tutor covers

The curriculum stays yours. These are the parts a tutor can take on.

  • The curriculum you already use

    intermediate · core

We do not choose CAPS or Cambridge for you. Tell us the curriculum, the grade or syllabus code if you have it, and the subject. The tutor follows that programme, not a mix of exam boards.

  • Cambridge at home

    exam · core

IGCSE first, then AS or A Level only if that is the next qualification. English First Language, English as a Second Language, and Literature are separate. Mathematics Core and Extended are separate. We are not the exam centre.

  • CAPS at home

    intermediate · core

Lessons follow CAPS for the grade you are teaching. Home Language is not First Additional Language, and Mathematics is not Mathematical Literacy. NSC entry depends on registration with the right authority, not on booking a tutor.

  • The subjects parents usually hand over

    intermediate · core

Mathematics, physical sciences, and English are the usual requests. You can keep teaching the subjects you are comfortable with and book a tutor only for the rest.

  • Exam practice in the lesson

    exam · core

The tutor works through past questions and the mark scheme for the syllabus your child will sit. We use papers in the lesson. We do not host a past-paper library.

  • What we do not do

    intermediate · core

We do not register your child with the province, supply a full homeschool curriculum, or complete assessed work. You stay responsible for the home education programme.

Common mistakes

Mistakes that waste a homeschool year

And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them

Using CAPS notes to prepare for a Cambridge paper, or Cambridge notes for a CAPS exam.

We ask which curriculum and which syllabus first, then the tutor stays on that paper.

Treating IGCSE, AS, and A Level as one course.

They are separate qualifications. The tutor teaches the one your child is entered for.

Assuming an exit from an IEB school still means an IEB exam entry.

IEB exams are for learners at IEB schools. We will say so plainly and tutor the curriculum you are actually using.

Leaving past papers until the month of the exam.

Weekly lessons can include exam questions earlier, using the mark scheme for that syllabus.

Asking a tutor to finish the portfolio or the assignment.

We explain and give feedback. We do not write or complete assessed work.

Study strategy

How a tutor fits a homeschool week

A clear path from your syllabus or specification to exam day

  1. 1

    Before the first lesson

Name the curriculum and the subject

Tell us Cambridge or CAPS, the grade or syllabus, and the subject you want help with. Include Core or Extended, and Home Language or First Additional Language, if those apply.

  2. 2

    Before you book

    Meet the tutor

The free Meet and Greet is a conversation, not a trial lesson you are billed for. You decide whether the tutor understands the programme you are running at home.

  3. 3

    Through the year

    Weekly subject lessons

One subject gets a fixed online slot. The tutor teaches the current topic and sets practice. The rest of the homeschool day stays with you.

  4. 4

    As the sitting approaches

Exam practice for the paper they will sit

Closer to the sitting, lessons use past questions and the mark scheme for that syllabus. We do not invent an exam date, and we do not enter your child for the exam.

Tactics

  • Book the subject you least want to teach yourself.

  • Keep Cambridge and CAPS materials separate.

  • Bring the syllabus or the distance-provider topic list to the first lesson.

  • Say which exam series you are aiming at, if there is one.

Recommended approach

Most families keep the homeschool timetable and add a tutor for one or two hard subjects. That is a better fit than handing over the whole day.

Start when the subject starts to stall, not only in the final weeks before an exam.

What your child will achieve

What homeschool families use tutoring for

A tutor takes the subjects you do not want to teach alone. The home education programme stays yours.

  • A specialist for mathematics, sciences, or English on the curriculum you already use

  • Cambridge IGCSE, AS, or A Level taught as separate qualifications

  • CAPS lessons that keep Home Language and First Additional Language apart, and Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy apart

  • Past-paper practice for the exam your child will sit, done in the lesson

  • A weekly online slot that does not depend on a school timetable

  • You remain the home educator, and we do not register your child

Tutoring supports your programme. It does not register your child for home education, enter them for an exam, or guarantee a result.

Questions about homeschool tutoring in South Africa

Does a tutor register my child for home education?

No. In South Africa you apply to your provincial education department. Global Tutors teaches the subjects you book. You remain responsible for registration and for the home education programme.

Can you tutor Cambridge IGCSE if we teach at home?

Yes. Tell us the syllabus. Cambridge IGCSE, AS, and A Level are separate qualifications, and we match a tutor to the one your child is taking. Exam entries are made with a Cambridge exam centre, not with us.

Do you support CAPS as well as Cambridge homeschool?

Yes, when CAPS is the curriculum you are using. Tell us the grade, whether English is Home Language or First Additional Language, and whether the subject is Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.

Can a homeschooled learner sit IEB exams through you?

IEB examinations are for learners at IEB schools. We can tutor a subject if your programme uses IEB content, but we do not enter candidates for the IEB, and leaving an IEB school does not by itself keep an IEB exam entry.

Will you teach the whole homeschool timetable?

No. Book the subjects you want help with. The rest of the day stays with you or with your curriculum provider.

Are the lessons one-to-one and online?

Yes. A small group is only if you ask, for example for siblings. Lessons are online. You meet the tutor in a free Meet and Greet before you book.

Do tutors complete portfolios or assignments?

No. We explain the work, practise questions, and give feedback. We do not write or complete assessed tasks.

When should we start?

A weekly lesson through the year suits most families. If an exam sitting is close, tell us which series so the tutor can focus on that paper. We do not set the exam dates.
