Matric rewrite and supplementary exams

One-to-one lessons for the subjects you are writing again. You register with the Department of Basic Education. Their Second Chance Matric Programme is free. We are a private tutor, and we are not that programme.

Which sitting the department lists

These are the rewrite opportunities published by the Department of Basic Education and the government services page. Dates and eligibility change. Confirm yours before you book lessons around them.

  • March supplementary

The Department of Basic Education lists an NSC supplementary sitting in March for candidates who qualify. The department decides who may enter. A tutoring site does not.

  • May and June

Progressed learners who wrote the year before and did not sit all six subjects are listed for June. Senior Certificate candidates, the adult qualification, write in June. Part-time NSC candidates can also write in May or June.

  • November, part-time NSC

Part-time NSC candidates can write in November as well as May or June. Who may register, and by which date, is set by the department for that year.

How tutoring helps a rewrite

The department teaches through its own centres, broadcasts, and materials. A private tutor is the extra hour on the subject you are writing.

  • The subjects on your entry

Lessons cover the subjects you are writing again. They are not a repeat of a full school year, and they are not a substitute for registering.

  • Past papers and the memo

A tutor works through DBE question papers and marking guidelines for that subject. Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy are different papers. Home Language and First Additional Language are different papers.

  • The sitting you are actually writing

Tell us March, May/June, or November if you already know it. We do not publish the rewrite dates, and we do not enter you for the exam.

Name the exam before the subject

A DBE Mathematics paper and an IEB Mathematics paper are not the same exam. Tell us which one is on your entry.

Senior Certificate

The Senior Certificate is the adult route. Candidates write in June. It is a different qualification from repeating a school NSC year. Age and subject rules come from the department.

How booking works

  1. 1

Tell us the exam and the subject

NSC, Senior Certificate, or IEB. The subject, and the sitting if you know it. Mathematics is not Mathematical Literacy.

  2. 2

We match a tutor for that paper

An IEB Maths tutor is the wrong match for a DBE Mathematics rewrite. The tutor needs the paper you are entered for.

  3. 3

    Meet them before you book

The Meet and Greet is free. Lessons are one-to-one and online. A small group is only if you ask, for example with a friend who is rewriting the same subject.

Papers and dates

Use the question paper and memo for the subject you are rewriting. Our November NSC timetable is the October and November full-time sitting. March and May/June dates are published by the department for that year.

Official DBE question papers: NSC past examination papers. We do not host the PDFs.

Questions people ask before a rewrite

What is a matric rewrite?
It means writing matric subjects again, or writing subjects you still need, after a first attempt. For the National Senior Certificate that is a DBE exam. The Senior Certificate is the separate adult qualification, usually written in June. IEB candidates use the IEB, not the DBE.
Are you the free Second Chance Matric Programme?
No. The Second Chance Matric Programme is run by the Department of Basic Education, and the department says that programme is free. Global Tutors is a private tutoring service. We do not register you, and we are not part of that programme.
Where do I register?
With the Department of Basic Education, your school, or your district office. Senior Certificate registration can also be done online through the department. Confirm the deadline for your sitting on education.gov.za before you plan lessons around a date.
Which sitting should I prepare for?
The department lists a March supplementary sitting, May/June exams for progressed learners, Senior Certificate candidates and part-time NSC candidates, and a November sitting for part-time NSC candidates. Who qualifies is their decision. Tell us the sitting once you are registered.
Can adults get a matric this way?
The Senior Certificate is the adult route, written in June. It is not the same as repeating a school NSC year. The department sets the age and subject rules. Tell us if that is the exam you are writing so the tutor uses the right papers.
Can I switch from Mathematical Literacy to Mathematics?
They are different subjects. A rewrite of Mathematical Literacy does not become Mathematics. If the department allows you to enter a new subject, say so, and we will match a tutor for that subject.
Will the tutor complete my school-based assessment?
No. Tutors explain the work, practise exam questions, and give feedback. They do not write school-based assessment or any assessed task. Whether an old SBA mark still counts is a department rule. Ask your district when you register.
Do you guarantee a pass or a university APS?
No. Tutoring is practice and explanation for the paper you are writing. An Admission Point Score depends on the results you achieve and on the university's own rules. You can estimate a common APS on our calculator after you have subject levels.
