What families say

Luke helped my daughter with English, and I honestly couldn't be happier with how the lessons went. She is normally quite shy when speaking English because it isn't her mother tongue, but Luke got her so engaged. He is very energetic and his enthusiasm was contagious. I could actually hear her giggling in the background during their lessons! I know she has worked hard as well, but Luke really helped bring her out of her shell and made English feel enjoyable rather than something she was nervous about. Her confidence with speaking and expressing herself has improved so much. I’m very grateful for the work he has done with her.

Marina Bodder, Parent

My daughter was finding Combined Sciences quite overwhelming. Lyndon has been very patient and structured in his approach, and he has helped her understand the topics. We’ve noticed a real improvement in both her confidence and her results, and she is much less anxious. As a parent, it has been reassuring to see her become more independent with her science work.

What you need to know about IB Middle Years Programme

What you need to know and how we support your child

The IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous two-year curriculum for students aged 16-19, recognised globally. The DP is made up of the DP core (Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service) and six subject groups: studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Students take one subject from each group at standard level (SL, 150 hours) or higher level (HL, 240 hours), with at least three at HL. At Global Tutors we specialise in IB Middle Years Programme and understand how it fits into the full DP. We hand pick the best tutor for your child's needs.

Our tutors specialise in IB Middle Years Programme and align every session to your child's curriculum and assessment objectives so your child can achieve their best.

Whether your child is aiming for a 7 at HL or strengthening their SL performance, our tutors work to the official IB Middle Years Programme subject guide and assessment criteria. We help your child build conceptual clarity, practise past papers, and develop the time management and exam technique that examiners look for. Starting early in the programme gives the best foundation; we also support intensive revision in the run-up to May or November exams.

Our tutors are qualified educators with direct experience of the IB (International Baccalaureate). They use official subject guides, past papers, and mark schemes so that your child's IB Middle Years Programme preparation is aligned with what examiners expect. One-to-one sessions let your child target their weakest areas and move at their own pace.

We keep pace with your school and the May or November exam cycle so preparation is aligned with deadlines.

What we cover

What we cover for IB Middle Years Programme

Curriculum-aligned content and skills we build with your child

Syllabus and subject guide alignment

intermediate · core

Content mapped to the official IB subject guide and subject brief for IB Middle Years Programme (SL/HL). We cover the core topics, options where relevant, and the assessment objectives so you know what examiners expect.

Past papers and exam technique

exam · core

Practice with past papers under timed conditions. We use mark schemes and examiner reports to show how to gain and lose marks, and how to structure extended responses and data-based questions.

Internal assessment (IA) support

intermediate · core

Guidance on planning, structure, and methodology for IAs. We help your child understand criteria and improve their own work. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.

Core concepts and revision

intermediate · core

Clear explanations of key concepts with worked examples. Structured revision so your child builds confidence before moving to past papers and harder application questions.

Extended and optional topics

advanced · supplement

Coverage of HL extension material or optional topics where relevant. We focus on depth and the kind of analysis that secures top marks.

TOK and Extended Essay links

advanced · optional

Where useful, we connect subject content to TOK or EE so your child can make cross-curriculum links that strengthen their overall diploma.

Common mistakes

Common Mistakes

And how working with a private online tutor can help your child avoid them

Answering the question you expected rather than the one set.

We practise interrogating the question: identifying key terms, command words, and scope so your child's answer stays on track.

Vague or general answers without specific evidence or examples.

We work on selecting and integrating precise evidence, quotes, or data so your child's arguments are well supported.

Weak structure: no clear introduction, development, or conclusion.

We use plans and outlines so your child builds a clear argument. We practise timed essays so structure becomes automatic.

Poor time management: spending too long on one part and rushing the rest.

We allocate time per section in past papers and practise under exam conditions so your child learns to pace themselves.

In coursework or IAs: unclear methodology or insufficient critical reflection.

We help your child plan methods and reflection so their work meets the criteria. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student.

Not reading the mark scheme so your child misses what examiners reward.

We use mark schemes and example responses so your child sees exactly how marks are awarded and what to include.

Study strategy

Study plan and exam strategy for IB Middle Years Programme

A clear path from your syllabus or specification to exam day

1

Ongoing through the programme

Foundation and syllabus mapping

Map your child's subject guide and identify strengths and gaps. We cover core topics with clear explanations and worked examples so your child has a solid base. Focus on precise definitions and key concepts that examiners test repeatedly.

2

From mid-DP1 or earlier

Past papers and exam technique

Introduce timed past papers and use mark schemes and examiner reports. We identify question types you find hardest and practise them. Build the habit of showing full working and checking units and reasonableness of answers.

3

As per your child's school deadlines

Internal assessment support

Plan and draft IAs with guidance on method, analysis, and criteria. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student. Leave time for redrafting and teacher feedback.

4

Final term before exams

Revision and exam readiness

Structured revision of weak areas and full past papers under exam conditions. We focus on time management, question selection, and avoiding the common mistakes highlighted in examiner reports.

Tactics

  • Use official IB (International Baccalaureate) subject guides and past papers as the backbone of revision.
  • Build a glossary of precise definitions for subjects that demand them.
  • Practise under timed conditions and mark your work with the mark scheme.
  • Start IAs early and get feedback on structure before writing the full draft.
  • Read examiner reports to see common errors and what gains marks.

Recommended approach

The IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Programme rewards consistent work and clear understanding. Start by aligning your child's revision to the subject guide and past papers.

Use active recall and spaced repetition for content-heavy topics. For IAs and the Extended Essay, plan early and seek feedback on structure and method; do not leave drafting to the last minute.

In the run-up to exams, prioritise timed past papers and examiner reports so you know exactly what each question type requires. Time management in exams is critical: your child should practise allocating time per section and stick to it.

Our tutors can tailor this approach to your child's subject and level (SL/HL) and focus on their weakest areas first.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions about IB Middle Years Programme

Common questions and answers

Who are the tutors for IB Middle Years Programme?+

Our tutors are qualified educators with experience in IB Middle Years Programme. We match you with someone who fits your child's level, goals, and schedule. All tutors are vetted and supported by Global Tutors. You can see tutor profiles and specialisms when you search so you choose someone aligned to your child's curriculum and subject.

How are IB Middle Years Programme sessions delivered?+

Sessions are delivered on our interactive online learning platform. Your child can learn from home or anywhere with a stable internet connection. We use a dedicated platform designed for one-to-one learning so your child can focus on the lesson. Your child will need a device with a camera and microphone; many students use a laptop or tablet. No special software is required beyond the link we send you.

How does IB Middle Years Programme tutoring align with the IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma Programme?+

Our tutors are familiar with the DP curriculum: the six subject groups (studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, the arts) and the core (TOK, Extended Essay, CAS). We align teaching to your subject guide and assessment criteria and use past papers, mark schemes, and examiner reports so your child's preparation matches what the IB expects. We can support subject content, internal assessments, and exam technique.

How do I get matched with an IB Middle Years Programme tutor?+

We hand pick the best tutor for your child's needs. Tell us your child's subject, level, curriculum (e.g. IB (International Baccalaureate), Cambridge, IEB), and goals (e.g. exam prep, coursework help, or general support). We recommend a tutor and you book your child's first lesson. If the fit is not right, our Fit-First Guarantee lets you request a replacement so you can try another tutor for your child at no extra cost.

What if the first IB Middle Years Programme tutor is not the right fit?+

We offer a Fit-First Guarantee: if your child's first lesson is not the right match, we'll replace your child's tutor - no questions asked. The replacement must be for the same subject and curriculum. This way you can focus on finding the right tutor without worrying about commitment after one session.

Do you help with IB Middle Years Programme Internal Assessments (IAs)?+

Yes. We help with planning, structure, methodology, and feedback on drafts. We guide planning and feedback, but we do not write or complete assessed work for the student. We explain the criteria and how to improve your analysis and presentation so your child can submit with confidence. Proper citation and academic integrity are important; we guide your child on that too.

When are IB Middle Years Programme exams and how is the grade determined?+

IB exams are held in May and November. Subject grades usually depend on final exams (often 70-80% of the grade) and internal assessment (20-30%). Each subject is graded 1-7; your child needs a minimum total of 24 points (and other diploma conditions) to pass. Our tutors help your child prepare for both the exam and IA components.

Can I change IB Middle Years Programme session times?+

Yes. Sessions are scheduled around your availability. You can arrange regular weekly slots or book ad-hoc lessons depending on your package and tutor availability. Many students have a fixed time each week; others prefer to book as they go, especially during exam revision.
